ARTS Bohola hosts hands-on intercultural project

Thirteen residents of the Direct Provision Accommodation Centre in Ballyhaunis are taking pottery classes with potter Henri Hedou

Bohola hosts hands-on intercultural project

Mayo Arts Office in partnership with Mayo Artsquad and Mayo Intercultural Action have come together to provide 13 people residing at the Direct Provision Accommodation Centre in Ballyhaunis with an opportunity to work with master potter Henri Hedou over a ten-week period.
The ‘Interland’ intercultural project began at Lissmirane Arts Resource Centre in Bohola on October 9. It will provide possibilities for positive artistic engagement and the chance to use the medium of pottery to express the stories and experiences of the group.
Henri Hedou has run his own pottery workshop in Bofeenaun – Terrybaun Pottery – for the last 26 years, but has been immersed in the ceramic world for over 40 years. At an early stage he did some teaching in a large private Arts Centre in Paris not knowing that he would do a lot more work in that area 30 years or so later. He enjoys being in contact with people of all ages passing on the skills and passion attached to his work.
The workshops are part of a larger project which received funding from the Arts Council under their Local Partnership Scheme. This scheme encouraged local authority arts services to propose projects in the area of cultural diversity and the arts. Mayo Arts Office collaborated with Leitrim County Council Arts Service on this project, and the partnership has already delivered Cultural Diversity Training to a number of community artists as well as a number of arts venue staff in Mayo and Leitrim. For further information on the Interland project, please contact Mayo Arts Office on 094 9047558 or amcging@mayococo.ie.
