Linenhall stages McPherson’s ‘Port Authority’
Conor McPherson’s funny and compassionate play ‘Port Authority’ will be staged at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, on Monday, October 15, at 8pm in a new production by Galway-based Decadent Theatre and Nuns Island Theatre. A young boy leaves home for the first time, a man begins a job for which he is not qualified, a pensioner receives a mysterious package… In ‘Port Authority’ we meet Kevin, Dermot and Joe, three generations of Irishmen, as each confronts the significance of these events and are forced to take stock of themselves, of their feelings and of the decisions they have made. Painting a vivid picture of life in contemporary Dublin with great wit and compassion, McPherson expertly exposes the heart of common man in a moving and funny tale of loves lost and found, the consequences of big dreams and the significance of even our smallest choices. McPherson is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s leading dramatists. He also penned the critically acclaimed plays ‘The Weir’, ‘The Seafarer’ and ‘Shining City’, as well as the film ‘I Went Down’. Reviewing ‘Port Authority’ New York Times critic Ben Brantley, The New York Times, described it as a ‘haunting fugue on passive lives and loves that might have been’. “I found myself holding on to what these actors had to say as if I were a 5-year-old at bedtime being introduced to The Arabian Nights.”
