Final call for Mayo schools to enter Re-turn Awards

Mayo students are encouraged to showcase sustainability projects ahead of April 27 deadline

Re-turn Awards final call

Schools and student groups in Mayo are being encouraged to enter the Re-turn Awards 2026 before the April 27 deadline

Primary schools and third-level groups across Mayo are being urged to submit their entries for the national Re-turn Awards 2026 as the deadline approaches.

Organisers Re-turn have issued a final call for participants to highlight how they are supporting their communities and the environment through Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme.

The awards celebrate the creativity and commitment of students and educators who are promoting recycling through initiatives such as fundraising drives, sustainability projects and awareness campaigns.

Since the scheme’s launch in 2024, schools have played a key role in improving recycling habits nationwide, with more than 700 primary schools already taking part in community initiatives.

Participants from Mayo are now being encouraged to submit their projects before the closing date of Monday, April 27, 2026.

Winners will be announced at a special ceremony in Croke Park on June 3, where top prizes of €5,000 will be awarded in both the primary school and third-level categories.

According to Re-turn Chief Marketing Officer Dermot Mulligan, the competition is about more than just recycling numbers.

“These awards recognise creativity, teamwork and community spirit,” he said. “We’ve seen inspiring projects from across the country, and we would strongly encourage schools and student groups in Mayo not to miss the opportunity to share their story.”

Entries will be judged by a panel including former Ireland rugby international Donnacha O’Callaghan and sustainable fashion designer Aoife McNamara, alongside experts in education and sustainability.

Judges will assess projects based on innovation, problem-solving, community impact and participation, as well as how effectively environmental awareness has been integrated into school or campus life.

Organisers say the awards aim to highlight the positive role young people are playing in promoting sustainability while also benefiting their local communities.

Full details and entry forms are available through the Re-turn website.
