Local favourite Pizza Pod celebrates first year in North Mayo

Family-run business on Tone Street in Ballina thanks community for support after successful first year

Pizza Pod turns 1

Pizza Pod on Tone Street, Ballina, is celebrating its first year in business after growing from a mobile food truck into a local favourite

A small mobile pizza truck that once travelled across North Mayo has grown into one of the most popular food spots in Ballina, as Pizza Pod marks its first year in business on Tone Street.

Run by husband-and-wife team Tony and Susan McCready, the business has become a firm local favourite since opening its permanent premises in April last year.

Pizza Pod first began as a travelling food truck, serving customers between Foxford and Ballina Quay. The decision to settle in a fixed location brought both opportunity and uncertainty.

“It was a big step going from the truck to the shop,” Susan said. “There were definitely days where we wondered what we had taken on, but the support from the community has been incredible.”

Over the past year, Pizza Pod has built a loyal customer base, offering everything from quick slices and lunchtime options to full family meals. The business has also expanded into catering, working with local organisations such as the Credit Union and Telus.

A popular addition has been its weekend pub delivery service, partnering with well-known local venues including Harrison’s Bar, An Bolg Buí and Rouse’s Pub to deliver food directly to customers enjoying a night out.

At the heart of the operation is Tony, who remains hands-on in the kitchen.

“I’m in there making the pizzas and serving customers—that’s what I love,” he said. “We focus on proper Roman and Neapolitan-style pizzas, using quality ingredients. That’s what people come back for.”

The menu has expanded over the year to include sandwiches, sides, lasagne and Italian street food such as supplì, all prepared with the same emphasis on flavour and quality.

Behind the scenes, Susan manages the business while also working full-time with the Health Service Executive, balancing the demands of both roles.

“It’s very much a family effort,” she said. “The kids help out, and we’ve built a great team around us. That’s been key to getting through the first year.”

The business has also focused on inclusive hiring, working with local supports to create opportunities for people with disabilities to join the team.

As they celebrate the milestone, the McCreadys say their focus remains on continuing to grow and serve the community that supported them from the beginning.

“We’re still learning and still building,” Tony added. “The first year hasn’t been without challenges, but the support from the community has made all the difference.”

Pizza Pod continues to operate from Tone Street in Ballina, serving customers from Thursday to Sunday with its evolving menu of Italian-inspired dishes.
