Emergency repair works are set to proceed at Roonagh Pier, a vital link to Clare Island and Inishturk.
The publication of tenders for emergency repair works at Roonagh Pier in Aghany has been welcomed as a key step in restoring full access to vital ferry services serving island communities off the Mayo coast.
Minister Dara Calleary confirmed that Mayo County Council has issued a request for contractors to carry out the necessary works.
Roonagh Pier acts as the main mainland hub for daily ferry services to Clare Island and Inishturk, making it a critical piece of infrastructure for residents, businesses and visitors.
Part of the pier has been closed since October 2025 after damage was identified in underwater structures. The outer section was shut as a precautionary measure while detailed engineering surveys were carried out to assess the extent of the damage and determine the required repairs.
The planned emergency works aim to strengthen and protect the existing structure, ensuring it can safely accommodate ferry operations into the future.

Minister Calleary said the progress is an important development for island communities.
“I welcome the publication of the tender request for these essential works at Roonagh Pier, which will ensure safe access for the island communities on Clare Island and Inishturk,” he said.
He added that his department is working closely with Mayo County Council, ferry operators and local stakeholders to ensure access is maintained throughout the repair process and that works proceed without delay.
