People across Mayo are being encouraged to showcase the beauty of their local rivers, lakes and coastline as part of a new national photography competition launched to mark World Water Day.
The competition, titled “My Favourite Waterbody 2026,” has been launched by the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) and is open to entrants of all ages across Ireland.
From the rugged Atlantic coastline to inland waterways like the River Moy and Lough Conn, Mayo participants are invited to capture images that reflect their connection to local waterbodies and highlight their importance to communities.
LAWPRO, who work with local authorities nationwide to protect and improve water quality, says the competition aims to encourage people to explore and appreciate Ireland’s natural water environments.
Anthony Coleman, Director of Services at LAWPRO, said the launch coincides with an important global awareness day.
“World Water Day is a time to recognise the importance of fresh water and the need to manage it sustainably,” he said. “This competition is a great way for people to connect with their local waters and share what makes them special.”

The overall winner will receive a €550 voucher for a stay at Sheen Falls Lodge, along with a framed print of their photograph. Three runners-up will also receive framed prints, while a selection of entries will feature in LAWPRO’s 2027 calendar.
The competition opens on March 22 and will run until 5 pm on Friday, May 22. Entries from participants under 18 must be submitted by a parent or guardian.
Organisers say the initiative is about more than photography, encouraging people to reflect on the role water plays in everyday life, from recreation and tourism to biodiversity and environmental protection.
With its abundance of scenic waterways and coastal views, Mayo is expected to feature strongly in this year’s competition as locals are invited to “explore, capture and celebrate” the waters that shape the county.
