Fuel allowance payment

Mayo families are set to receive their first Fuel Allowance payment today (Thursday, March 12) with backdated support to ease energy costs across the county

Mayo households are set to benefit today (Thursday, March 12) as 1,400 families receive their first Fuel Allowance payment along with backdated support, Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary has confirmed.

The payments, part of the Budget 2026 expansion, are backdated to 1 January, with recipients receiving €38 per week plus up to €380 in back pay—more than €400 in total.

The payment forms part of the Budget 2026 expansion of the Fuel Allowance to around 50,000 households nationwide in receipt of the Working Family Payment.

“The expansion of the fuel payment will benefit an additional 1,400 households across the constituency, bringing the total of recipients to 17,197,” said Minister Calleary. “This will make a real difference to working families with their energy bills.”

The scheme also allows those on Disability Allowance or Blind Pension to retain Fuel Allowance for five years if they move into employment, offering extra support for families balancing work and home heating costs.

The first payments are being issued today (Thursday, March 12), providing immediate relief to Mayo households as energy prices continue to challenge working families.
