Minister Dara Calleary has announced he will be allocating €1.1 million from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) to enhance and further develop four projects in Mayo.
Minister Dara Calleary announced that €500,000 will be allocated under Measure 3 to Clare Island for upgrading the existing 2.2km path to the bike trail, improving accessibility for users.
In addition, €200,000 will be given to the Belleek Woods Enhancement Committee to upgrade and resurface the woodland trails. A further €200,000 will be allocated to Mayo North East for improvement works on existing routes along the Kilcummin Loop Trail, and another €200,000 will go towards upgrading and extending the boardwalk at the Mayfield Lake Trail in Claremorris.
Speaking on the investment, Minister Calleary said:
“This investment will further enhance these spaces, which not only act as recreational and social spaces for our communities but also add greatly to our tourism sector. Today’s announcement, on Clare Island, will see a wide range of capital projects delivered across the country, covering walking and cycling trails, upland paths, and enhancements in water-based activities.
“This is all further delivering on the objectives of our national outdoor recreation strategy, Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors, and I am delighted to allocate significant funding to four Mayo projects,” he said.
