Mayo voters decide on who they want to be President
The result of the first round of voting in Mayo has been declared by Dr Ann Marie Courell, the Returning Officer for Mayo.
Catherine Connolly received 28039 votes in Mayo, meaning that two out of every three of the valid votes in the constituency went to the Independent candidate.
While Heather Humphreys was in a distant second place with 11,957 votes, receiving 28% of the valid votes in the normally Fine Gael stronghold of Mayo.
There were 6,311 spoilt votes in the constituency, which means is a more than ten fold increase in the number of spoilt votes compared to the General Election in Mayo.
The huge number of spoilt votes was more than double the number of votes that Fianna Fáil's Jim Gavin received.
The former Dublin GAA football manager has withdrawn from the campaign a number of weeks ago but remained on the ballot paper.
He received 2,596 votes in the Mayo constituency, equating to 6% of the valid votes.
