Castlebar Mitchels secured West Mayo success when they overcame Na Fianna in fine style on Tuesday night.

The deadly Joe Forry kicked 2-6 on the evening as the speedy and skillful attacker proved to be the difference with an eye-catching performance. Forry, who has represented Mayo at minor level, scored 2-4 in the first half as the Na Fianna side struggled to contain the full forward.

After a surprise victory over Westport previously, Na Fianna came into this clash as underdogs once again but battled gamely right till the end with the impressive Ryan McNamara contributing a hefty ten points on the evening.

It took the Burrishoole Islandeady combination 17 minutes to register their first score as Mitchels raced into a seven-point lead. This year’s Mayo minors Eoghan Dever and Patrick Garvey tagged on points for Castlebar before Stephen Chambers hit back with a much-needed goal at a crucial time for the amalgamated side.

Leading by seven at the break, Mitchels were in pole position.

As Forry continued scoring for fun, Na Fianna grew into the game with Gary Wallace and Caelan Moran to the fore as they rejuvenated their side with pace and urgency. The accurate Ryan McNamara kicked an impressive eight points in the second period including two fine two-pointers but Daniel Filan’s goal finished the proceedings as he rounded off a fine Mitchels performance.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
