The reigning Mayo kingpins came from behind to gain victory in an extraordinary game which had plenty of drama.

Trailing 3-1 with 40 minutes remaining, the hoops were resilient as they dug out a win in amazing fashion.

Celtic’s Jordan Loftus opened the scoring after 29 minutes as he slotted home from the penalty spot. The hosts were the better side throughout the opening 45 as Benny Lavelle and Goodhope Mutendebvure had Ballina in the lead after two incredible finishes to the net.

Pj Gilmartin extended the lead as moments later, Mark Cunningham replied with a headed effort from a corner kick. Stevie Gavin and Co were made to work as midfielder Oran Groarke saw red for verbals. A spectacular diving header from Jordan Loftus equalised proceedings before former Ballina Town player Dylan Edwards secured the three points with a fine goal.

In the dying stages, Mick Duffy’s side were awarded a penalty kick and in the last kick of the game, Dylan Mc Kee saw his effort hit the post.

Castlebar Celtic remain unbeaten as former star Ronan O’Boyle made an appearance which will no doubt strengthen the Castlebar squad.

A full match report plus reaction from Dylan Edwards will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
