MAYO Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has been appointed as a Minister of State for Small Business and Retail and Circular Economy.

The Castlebar-based TD who was elected to Dáil Éireann for the second time in November's General Election had previously been a Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Fine Gael leader, Simon Harris announced the party’s Minister of State appointments this afternoon with Deputy Dillon taking up his new role in the  Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

Deputy Dillon had been tipped by many to be appointed as a senior minister particularly after Fine Gael managed to elect two TDs in the Mayo constituency.

“Our party leader is limited in terms of the number of positions he has at a senior level but ... we had a fantastic election and Fine Gael returned 35 percent of the first preference vote share within the county. It is difficult to say who will be appointed to which portfolio but I can certainly say I will be in the mix and that is important,” he told The Mayo News before the announcement of the cabinet.

However, he failed to be named among the seven Fine Gael TDs who were given a senior post last Thursday with his Fianna Fáil rival in Mayo, Dara Calleary getting a senior appointment.
