MAYO County Council has granted planning permission for the development of a new public trailhead close to the Greenway on Achill Island.

Publican Joe Fadian of Ted's Bar in Cashel on Achill Island was granted permission for the trailhead which will be located at the rear of the popular pub.

The proposal is to develop a trailhead consisting of eleven car-parking spaces, bike parking spaces, bicycle rental / maintenance shed/structure, toilet pod, sheltered picnic pod, public information board and waste collection facilities as well as a picnic seating area, bicycle charging points and a new vehicular entrance from the neighbouring public roadway.

It is proposed that the new trailhead will serve as an amenity to the public using the Great Western Greenway on Achill Island which currently comes to an end close to Ted's Bar. Funding has been granted to extend the next phase of the Greenway from Cashel to Bunnacurry with the extension process currently going through the planning stages.

Bike hire business, Blásta Bikes which rents bicycles to members of the public using the Greenway is currently located at Ted's Bar.

Planning permission was granted for the development subject to 13 conditions.
