Mayo driver caught speeding at 109km per hour in a 50km zone in Castlebar
A MOTORIST who drove at 109km per hour in a 50km per hour zone in Castlebar told a court he had no excuse for his driving on the day.
Matthew Timlin of 93 Manor Village, Castlebar appeared before Castlebar District Court where he was warned he faced losing his driving licence after admitting to speeding.
Garda PJ O'Donnell explained that on November 21, 2023 he was on duty on the Westport Road in Castlebar when he detected a 2011 registered BMW travelling at a speed of 109km per hour in a 50km per hour zone.
Garda O'Donnell stopped the vehicle and issued Mr Timlin with a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice but the fine went unpaid.
The court heard that Mr Timlin has three previous convictions relating to road traffic offences and was disqualified from driving for four years in 2018 for having no insurance.
Representing himself in court, Mr Timlin explained that at the time he was working two jobs but he was not using it as an excuse and had no reason for driving at that speed.
Judge Fiona Lydon told Mr Timlin that she was considering disqualifying him from driving given the speed he was driving and his previous convictions.
She ordered that he engage with the Probation Services for the preparation of a probation report and adjourned sentencing until March 28.
