Planning permission has been sought for new hotel on Achill Island

Proposal to knock 'Beach House' on Achill Island and develop a hotel with spa

PLANNING permission has been sought to develop a new 12-bedroom spa hotel on Mayo's largest island which will include a wedding suite, gym and spa.

The application by Trasa Jones to construct a new hotel in the village of Dooagh, close to Keem Bay on Achill Island, was submitted to the planning department of Mayo County Council last week.

The proposed development overlooking the Atlantic will consist of the demolition of an existing dwelling house known as the Beach House and the construction of a new hotel.

The development will consist of 12 bedroom suites and include a wedding function room, bar, commercial kitchen, gym, spa and leisure facilities with sauna, cinema room, yoga studio as well as staff quarters.

The site location is adjacent to Dooagh beach which made international headlines in 2017 when the beach which had been washed away 30 years previously returned when a freak tide deposited hundreds of tonnes of sand on the rocky shoreline.

The news of the beach's overnight reappearance was covered on BBC, CNN, Fox News, Time and Shanghai Daily with tourists from all over the world travelling to Achill to see the new beach.

However storms in 2019 swept the sand back into the Atlantic to once again expose the rocky shoreline.
