The Blacksod Point Challenge Triathlon has been cancelled due to poor weather forecast
The Blacksod Point Challenge Triathlon which was due to take place tomorrow has been cancelled due to forecasted adverse weather conditions.
A large number of athletes and supporters were due to travel to Erris for the triathlon but organisers announced that they have had to take the decision to cancel this year's much anticipated event.
“It is with deep regret that the Blacksod Challenge Triathlon Committee announces the cancellation of this year’s event due to forecasted adverse weather conditions,” the group wrote on its Facebook page.
“After careful consideration and with the safety of all participants as our top priority, the decision has been made to cancel the event scheduled for Saturday, September 14.
“The forecast for the event period indicates not only unsafe conditions for the sea swim portion of the race, but also significant safety risks for participants during the bike and run stages due to heavy wind and rain. The potential for increased exposure and hazardous conditions leaves the committee with no other choice but to act in the best interests of our competitors, volunteers, and spectators.
“We understand the disappointment this may cause, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience,” they stated.
As a gesture of goodwill, the committee says that all registered participants will receive automatic entry into next year’s event or should any competitor prefer a refund, they will process your request through Triathlon Ireland.
Despite the disappointment of having to cancel Saturday's triathlon, the committee added that it remains fully committed to making next year’s Blacksod Challenge Triathlon which they say will be an even more exciting event.
“In recognition of your understanding and support, we are pleased to announce that the prize pot for the 2025 event will be increased and the date will be confirmed in due course with Triathlon Ireland.
“We deeply appreciate your continued support and understanding in this difficult decision, which was made with the safety of everyone involved at the forefront of our considerations.”
For any further inquiries, participants are asked to contact the committee by email on blacksodpointchallenge@gmail.com.
