A NEW pontoon has been installed at a pier on Achill Island which will make accessing boats safer and benefit both local and tourist users.

The new pontoon was recently installed at Dugort pier on Achill Island which in recent years has been used regularly to bring tourists on tours of Blacksod Bay and views of the Croaghaun Cliffs which are the highest sea cliffs in Europe.

Local councillor Paul McNamara welcomed the installation of the new pontoon which he says will be a crucial piece of infrastructure of the local area.

“The day has finally arrived. I am proud to say that the pontoon at Dugort pier has been installed,” the Fianna Fáíl councillor wrote on his Facebook page.

“This is a massive piece of infrastructure for the area and will prove crucial during the summer months, for both recreational use and to create revenue for the area. This development did not come easy and is something I have lobbied hard for.

“I would like to thank Minister [for Agriculture] Charlie McConalogue, Minister Dara Calleary TD and Mayo County Council for working alongside me, ensuring the funding was secured, which has resulted in this project coming to life,” he concluded.

Minister of State Dara Calleary also welcomed the installation of a new pontoon at Dugort Pier on Achill Island and commended Cllr McNamara for successfully lobbying the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for investment at the pier.

“This is a very significant and welcome development at Dugort. The addition of the pontoon will make water safety and general accessibility far greater than before. It will benefit both local and tourist users as well as neighbouring coastal communities in Blacksod and Belmullet. I want to thank Cllr Paul McNamara for his assistance with this – we worked hard for the last 18 months in conjunction with my government colleague Minister Charlie McConalogue to secure the money and with Mayo County Council to ensure that the project proceeded in as timely a manner as possible. It is great to now see the pontoon in place and operational,” he said.
