Mayo's Caelan Doris led Ireland to an historic victory over Italy in Dublin today. The Lacken native captained the side to an impressive 36-0 win over the guests and the scoreline was a unique one, given that it was the first time Ireland ever prevented Italy scoring against them. The countries had met 36 times previously, but today was the first shut-out.
Jack Crowley with a try and two conversions and Dan Sheehan and Jack Conan with tries left Ireland with a 19-0 lead at the break. Sheehan scored his second try early in the second half and James Lowe raced over after 61 minutes to make it 29-0. The final try of the day arrived after 77 minutes when Calvin Nash crossed the whitewash and Harry Byrne kicked the conversion.
It was a great day for Ireland, and a magical one for Doris as the former Ballina RFC player enjoyed a wonderful afternoon in front of the home crowd.
