128 Mayo farmers have joined the scheme this year
Over one hundred Mayo farmers have joined the Organic Farming Scheme this year.
This number brings the total to 408 in Mayo, and 5000 across the country.
Green Party candidate for Europe in the region, Senator Pauline O'Reilly, said the organically farmed area in Ireland has tripled since 2020.
Ms O’Reilly revealed that Mayo is ‘the second-highest county for new organic farmers’ in 2024, and called these milestones ‘really significant’ as they show that the organic sector ‘continues to grow at a significant pace’.
“Many farmers in Ireland are at stocking rates where they can easily replace expensive chemical fertiliser and imported concentrates with multispecies grass and red clover. It takes a high level of skill and understanding of how healthy soil works to trust yourself to farm organically, and Irish farmers are well able for this challenge” she concluded.
Westport’s Green candidate, Peter Nolan, would ‘encourage farmers considering’ the move to join the farm walks, which have been planned by the Department of Agriculture, ‘to see if it is something that would work for them’.
The Organic Farming Scheme provides financial support to farmers to encourage production of organic foods to meet market demand.
