Two Mayo attractions were awarded at last night’s CIE Tours Awards of Excellence.

The award ceremony that took place in Dublin saw success for both Ballintubber Abbey and The Wyatt Hotel, Westport.

The Awards recognise Ireland’s hospitality ambassadors, the people and businesses throughout the country who put Irish tourism on the global stage.

The Wyatt Hotel, which is situated in the heart of Westport, was awarded the ‘best 3-star hotel’ in Ireland.

Barney Clarke and the team at the hotel have consistently sought to improve the hotel’s offerings to guests, and their efforts have been rewarded with positive feedback from CIE Tours guests.

Ballintubber Abbey received a CIE Tours Merit Award for the quality of visitor experience.

Interim CEO of CIE Tours, Stephen Cotter, said the group were ‘delighted’ to present the two Mayo companies with these awards.

“Each of these businesses make an important contribution to Irish tourism, and to their local communities in terms of jobs and wealth creation” he said.

Congratulating the Mayo award winners, he continued to praise their ‘dedication and commitment’ in maintaining Ireland’s reputation as a leading destination for US visitors.

Booking for 2024 is already ahead of expectations, according to Mr Cotter. He said the focus on both urban and rural tourism is ‘intentional’ as it ‘supports the company’s sustainability goal of partnering with a diverse set of regional and independent businesses to extend economic benefits into local communities’.

Mr Cotter shared that CIE Tours will continue its commitment to sustainability launched last year.  A carbon strategy has been implemented, and the company will be hiring a dedicated sustainability manager to work alongside tourism partners.

“We are also looking at ways to reduce our own impact, and I am delighted to announce that this year we are operating a coach powered by biofuel on the more than 60 departures for our Irish Gold Tour” he concluded.
