Mayo hurlers start league in impressive fashion

HURLING

NATIONAL LEAGUE Division 3A Round 1

Mayo 1-18

Armagh 2-7

In Castlebar

Mayo Hurlers opened their Allianz League campaign with a victory, against last year's runners-up, Armagh, who finished the game with 13 men.

It was a game with a lot of potential, but ultimately suffered, due to the strong breeze in Hastings Insurance McHale Park.

The home side had hit seven points without a response in the opening quarter, with excellent scoring from the likes of Liam Lavin and Cormac Phillips.

The visitors relied on corner forward Alex O’ Boyle, to keep the scoreboard ticking over in the opening half.

Mayo led 0-13 to 2-3 at the interval, however, with the strong breeze this lead would not guarantee them the win.

But this Mayo side, who had a disappointing 2023 campaign, kept their composure and managed to hold on to their lead, conceding no scores from play in the second half.

Ballyhaunis’ Adrian Phillips gave a man-of-the-match display scoring a total of 1-2

Mayo will be hoping to build off of this momentum when they take on

Monaghan in Round 2, on Sunday.
