Mayo Meteors caught at the death in Castlebar thriller

Terry Kennedy's men push favourites all the way

Mayo Meteors caught at the death in Castlebar thriller

BAKETBALL IRELAND DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

ROUND 6

Mayo Meteors 76

Carrick Cruisers 87

(After Overtime)

THIS thriller had it all. Those fortunate enough to be in the De La Salle Hall in Castlebar on Saturday night were treated to a stunning encounter where breathless basketball danced in front of their eyes.

The only slight downside was the end result, but the scoreline doesn't tell even half the story.

Mayo Meteors led at the end of the first three quarters, but were pegged back to parity at the end of regulation time, and beaten in Overtime.

Cruisers came into the game with a fearsome reputation and had easily disposed of previous opponents but were brought right to the cusp of defeat by Terry Kennedy's squad before eventually going up the road with victory.

Meteors had stars all over the floor. Mattie McHale, Alex Evans, Paul Freeman, and Hermann Heyl were among the Mayo players to catch the eye all night but a stunning drive from Cruisers' Andrew O'Connor in the third quarter closed the gap and the scores were tied going into the final seconds of regulation time.

Meteors had the opportunity to win it at the death but it wasn't to be and the guests survived before pulling away in Overtime.

A full match report and on-court reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
