Paddy Durcan
IF Lee Keegan was the king of Mayo wing-backs, then Durcan is certainly a high-ranking member of the nobility.
Leading from the back yet again, The Duke of Castlebar drove at the Dublin defence just as Mayo were beginning to lag in the first half.
He also kept tabs on Dublin footballing royalty in Ciaran Kilkenny, who started well but faded into irrelevance.
Like Leeroy The Great before him, Durcan delivered when it mattered most.
Fergal Boland
THE Wes Hoolahan of Mayo GAA did his place in the forwards’ pecking order no harm at all on Saturday evening.
He was the coolest man in MacHale Park when Ryan O’Donoghue wisely played him in with a free from the wing, allowing his fellow pocket rocket to kick the winner in injury time.
Besides that, the former Under-21 All-Ireland winner got on a fair amount of ball and always tried to move it forward.
No answer was forthcoming when the The Mayo News asked Kevin McStay if it was a mistake to drop the Aghamore man from the panel last year.
“Last question there lads,” added Mayo GAA PRO John Walker.
Ryan O’Donoghue
WHO says Mayo have no forwards?
Anyone who does would want to see Ryan O’Donoghue at his best, like he was for periods on Saturday evening.
One sublime outside-of-the boot effort was among the first-half highlights for the University of Galway student.
He can also kick-pass with the best of them, as he showed with a clever lateral ball to set up the winning score.
The 25-year-old missed some kickable scores, but his six-point tally was no bad day’s work for the Belmullet man, who has firmly established himself as Mayo’s key forward.
He could do with some help though; only two other Mayo forwards, Paul Towey and Fergal Boland (a point each) scored on the night.
