A new GP surgery in Lahardane is set to finally reopen following a long-running local campaign.
The surgery will be officially open in the North Mayo village from tomorrow (Thursday) and will be fully operational by Wednesday, February 7.
Concerns were expressed locally last October when Dr Enda Loftus moved to a vacant position in Crossmolina, a move which affected some 1,100 medical card holders in the locality.
The local community later identified a doctor who was willing to move into the Lahardane surgery who was appointed following and after a number of weeks of negotiations.
Mayo TD Michael Ring described the opening of the surgery as ‘tremendous news’ and ‘a testament to the community spirit demonstrated by this wonderful community’.
The Fine Gael TD also acknowledged the work of William Barrett and local election candidate Gerry Loftus in campaigning for the surgery to reopen.
“I also want to thank the HSE for working with the local community to bring this to a successful conclusion,” added Deputy Ring.
“People power, working with their Local Representatives works so well when everyone comes together.”
