Items from Cannon's Pub in Castlebar are to be auctioned next month. The pub closed to the public in 1989.
Victor Mee Auctions have today announced a two-day live online auction, featuring the extensive collection from one of Ireland's most legendary pubs, Cannon's Pub in Castlebar.
Preliminarily scheduled for February 6 and 7, the sale will see the esteemed Cavan based auction house bring to the rostrum a diverse catalogue of pub memorabilia, collectables, vintage advertising and relics of social history.
Cannon's Pub was long one of the most popular and iconic establishments in Mayo and, since its closure in 1989, has remained practically frozen in time, a gallery of local and national history. Speculation has been mounting over the future of the beloved premises after the removal of items from Cannons had been noted locally.
Victor Mee Auctions has been a specialist in this type of sale for many years, hosting memorabilia and collectables sales and handling the clearance of some of the country's most loved establishments. Last year saw the team auction the contents of Killoran's Pub in Tubbercurry, Sligo, another celebrated traditional Irish pub that sadly closed its doors, in a mammoth two day auction event.
The auction house is well seasoned in sales like this one. With years of experience providing valuations and hosting pub sales, the team at Victor Mees understands the significance and the history of these items and has built a loyal clientele of avid collectors and aficionados who will, no doubt, show the Cannons lots the love and respect they have earned.
Some of the top lots set to appear include a stunning Sir John Powers Irish Whiskey pub mirror, a magnificent collection of early 20th century enamel advertising signs, a McConnells Irish whiskey dispenser, a Goodbodys Irish Roll Tobacco advertising mirror, a collection of early 20th century Irish whiskey and an early 20th century petrol pump.
Speaking ahead of the sale, auctioneer, Victor Mee said: “A consignment from such an esteemed premises like Cannons is a huge honour for us.
