A Crossmolina man has appeared in court after been charged with the murder of his mother at an address in Sligo last year.
The accused, Nigel Canavan of 16 Erris Gardens, Erris Road, Crossmolina, appeared before Carrick-on-Shannon District Court this morning over the death of 58-year-old Angela Canavan, whose body was discovered at the home she rented in St John’s Terrace, Sligo, on May 1, 2023. A native of Crossmolina, she had been renting the property in Sligo for some time.
When charged with her murder, Nigel Canavan replied, 'not guilty'.
Canavan, 38, was brought before Judge Michael Connellan on Tuesday after Gardaí arrested and charged him with murder at 5.49pm on Monday. The court was told DPP directions are that he be tried for murder at the Central Criminal Court.
The accused has been remanded in custody to reappear at Sligo District Court on Thursday next.
