There are big plans for further development of The Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre in 2024.
2024 is going to be a very significant year for Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitors Centre.
The Aquarium and Visitor Centre will be transformed as they start the next stage of their story through a significant expansion of the aquarium.
This is incredibly exciting for them and will mean: the size of the aquarium will increase by roughly 50 percent as they move from having 16 to 23 tanks; the capacity each day for visitors will double; new jobs will be created for 2-4 local people.
As a community-based organisation they rely heavily on donations both through grant-funding as well as individual and commercial donations.
Comhlacht Forbartha Áitiúil Acla (CFÁA) was approved as a Social Enterprise in 2017 which has helped the development of the Achill Experience.
Terence Dever from CFÁA stated: “Throughout our history we have received enormous support from the people of Achill, the local, regional and national business community, political representatives national and local, regional and national agencies as well as our ever-generous and proud diaspora.
“Since the Achill Experience opened in 2016 there has been a steady increase in visitor numbers to the facility. We welcomed 30,000 visitors in the past year. Visitor testimonials and feedback on various platforms, prove how enjoyable a visit to the Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre is. Fáilte Ireland has estimated that the Achill Experience has contributed €9 million to Achill's Economy since it opened 7 years ago.
