Man killed in road crash in South Mayo

Man in his 30s dead and a woman hospitalised following two-vehicle collision between Hollymount and Claremorris

A man has been killed in a two-vehicle collision which occurred near Claremorris. 

The impact occurred this morning near a crossroads on the R311 at Belladaff, Tagheen, near Claremorris.

The deceased man, who is his late 30s, was the sole occupant of one of the vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver of the other car (20s) was taken to Mayo University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The R331 (the Claremorris to Ballinrobe Road) is currently closed between Claremorris and Hollymount while a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators is being conducted. Local diversions are in place.

According to gardaí, several accidents have been reported across the South Mayo region today amid reports of black ice on the roads.  

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R331 between Claremorris and Hollymount between 7.30am and 8.00am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
