A PUB in in rural Mayo was burgled in the early hours of this morning while a family slept in an apartment above the premises, The Mayo News can reveal.

The Drum Inn in Clogher was broken into after 1am on Thursday morning by three suspects, who were captured on CCTV.

The perpetrators disabled the alarm system and stole a cigarette machine and cash from the premises. Three doors were also damaged during the burglary.

A barricade was placed up against a door leading into an apartment above the premises to prevent the people living there from coming downstairs. The family living in the accommodation remained asleep throughout the burglary.

The individuals drove towards Belcarra via Holy Angels NS following the break-in.

Joe Mahon, who has been running the pub for a number of years, described the burglary as ‘scummy enough a couple of weeks before Christmas’ when he spoke to The Mayo News.

Mr Mahon had left the premises approximately 15 minutes before the break-in.

A Garda investigation is currently under way into the matter.

Anyone with dashcam footage or who was in the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 9038200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
