Record number of homes completed in Mayo in first nine months of the year

THE Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has said that that 377 new house were completed in Mayo during the first nine months of this year, according to new CSO figures.

This is an increase of 14.2 percent on the same period of 2022 (330 units), and the highest number of completions recorded in Mayo for the first three-quarters of any year since the CSO data series began in 2011.

Nationally, a record 22,443 houses have been completed in the first nine months of 2023 so far.

According to the latest available figures from Daft.ie, the average listed house price in Mayo stands at over €212,000 while the average monthly rent was over €1,200.

Recently released government figures showed there were 572 people in emergency accommodation across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon at the end of September, including 352 adults and 220 children.

There are also over 2,500 people were on Mayo County Council’s social housing waiting list as of early September.

Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien insisted that the government was ‘going in the right direction’ with housing.

“Nationally, the number of planning permissions for the first nine months of this year were up. In the same period, the number of new build homes commenced was almost 24,000 homes - a 14.3 percent increase on the same period last year,” said Minister O’Brien.

“And now, the latest CSO figures on completions show that in both Mayo and countrywide, supply is increasing and that we are going in the right direction.

Minister O’Brien said that the government may exceed it’s target of delivering 29,000 new houses in 2023.

Mayo County Council has said it is on track to deliver over 1,000 social houses under the Housing For All programme by 2026.

“All of this momentum is welcome, but we are not complacent,” said Minister O’Brien.

“I have always said that there is no one single magic bullet to solve the housing crisis but rather a variety of complementary initiatives and reforms. Whether it’s planning reforms, new supports for prospective home buyers, cost rental and other initiatives for tenants or incentives to encourage more construction, this Government is leaving no stone unturned to deliver on our targets under Housing for All.”
