Flynn predicts Mulranny to overtake Westport as top spot in Mayo

A WESTPORT councillor is predicting that Mulranny will soon overtake Westport as the premier town or village in the county. Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn made the remark at the monthly meeting of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District where he praised the Mulranny community for all the work they have carried out in the village in recent years.

The west Mayo village represented Ireland in the European Entente Florale competition in 2019 and in 2021 was chosen as Mayo's first Decarbonisation Zone following a county-wide competition.

At the recent National Tidy Towns competition, Mulranny finished just three points behind Westport and Cllr Flynn said that he believes that Mulranny will soon be the best town or village in Mayo.

“I think the work the community does in Mulranny is something that can inspire communities right around the country. I have no doubt when I say that. We had the tidy towns results in Croke Park and Mulranny were within three points of Westport and keep in mind Westport went up 12 points. If anyone doesn't think that Mulranny is coming at speed and is going to be the number one town or village in Mayo very soon and number one winner in the country, be under no illusion that it will happen. Mark my words within the next five years it will happen because what they are doing is simply incredible,” he said.

Cllr Flynn made the comments during a presentation on the Mulranny Decarbonisation Zone and added that Mulranny also has the National Park on its doorstep as well as having community members involved in the Mayo Dark Skies Project.

“It is an exciting time for Mayo and this part of Mayo will be a beacon of light for the whole country for the work they are doing. All I can say is keep up the amazing work and anything we as councillors to assist we will endeavour to do that. You know what to do and achieve it and you will educate us along the way,” he said.
