HSE says Lahardane GP discussions still ongoing

THE HSE has said that a GP has expressed in interest in vacant position in Lahardane, but no appointment has yet been made.

Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon had stated that an offer had been made to a candidate who was willing to accept it and that a contract was currently being drawn up.

A statement was subsequently issued by the Rural Ireland Organisation (RIO) stating that no contract had been agreed and that negotiations were ongoing.

RIO leader Gerry Loftus, a community representative, and two HSE members, met with a doctor who would consider the position if various issues were addressed, including a proposal as to how he would be paid.

Mr Loftus said that RIO would not be making any further comment on the matter.

In a statement issued to The Mayo News, HSE Community Healthcare West confirmed that a GP had recently ‘expressed an interest in possibly setting up practice in Lahardane’.

“Discussions are taking place with him, but he has not yet decided if he will proceed or not.”

The Lahardane area has been without a GP for several weeks after Dr Enda Loftus left the village to take up a position in Crossmolina.

Over 1,000 medical card holders are believed to be affected by the move.

Concern has been expressed locally that locals will have to attend A&E in Castlebar to receive care that used to be provided in Lahardane.
