153 burglaries have occurred in Mayo in the past 12 months.
THE number of burglaries in Mayo has increased by 17 percent in the past 12 months, despite a nationwide decrease of 8 percent.
According to the quarterly PhoneWatch Burglary Report, 153 burglaries have occurred in the county in the past 12 months.
This represented the second-highest increase of any county, with only Sligo/Leitrim recording a higher increase (25 percent) on the previous recorded period.
Mayo was one of only seven areas to record an increase in burglaries so far this year.
Figures presented at the most recent meeting of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee showed a ‘sharp increase’ in recorded property crime but a decrease in property crime overall.
Sgt Sean Cunnane, Crime Prevention Officer for Mayo, said that gardaí are investigating several burglaries in at private houses in Ballinrobe, Partry, Crossmolina, Foxford, Swinford, Claremorris, Aghamore, Irishtown, Ballyhaunis, Ballindine and Kilkelly.
Earlier this summer, three premises in the South Mayo area, including a crèche, were broken into in a 48-hour period.
“We are appealing to the public for any information, no matter how insignificant, to report it to the gardaí,” said Sgt Cunnane.
Eoin Dunne, Managing Director of PhoneWatch, called on people to remain vigilant during the winter months, during which burglaries can rise by as much as 20 percent. Nearly half of these burglaries occur between 5pm and 11pm in the evening.
Mr Dunne said: “When you look at the broader data over the last decade it shows that on average, one in every ten Irish homes has experienced a break-in during the last 10 years. We need to get this number down and we want to work with all homeowners to ensure they are taking the necessary steps to keep their homes secure and their families safe, 24/7”.
PhoneWatch is advising people to ensure that their doors and windows are locked, to secure their keys and to leave a light on when not at home.
People are also advised never to leave car keys, cash, jewellery or any valuable items openly on display and to install an alarm system in their home.
