A WESTPORT women is set to run the Dublin City Marathon in memory of her late brother to fundraise for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

Marian O’Malley will be running the marathon in October 29 in memory of her brother William Sheridan, who passed away last year in the care of Mayo Hospice at 31 years of age.

Writing on her GoFundMe page, Marian described William as ‘the jewel in the crown’ of her home on Altamount Street.

He received his education St Brid’s Special School in Castlebar from six until the age of 19 and later attended Carrowbeg Enterprises, ‘which allowed him to live a life of fun, independence and inclusivity’.

“Despite William’s mostly quiet demeanour, he was a fighter and fought hard to the bitter end. His illnesses through the years, may have caused others to despair and give up but that was not William,” Marian said.

“He lived every day of his life with great effort and never gave up. But unfortunately, his body gave up on him and with the help of the Mayo Hospice we were able to spend our last hours as a family.”

Marion is encouraging people to give generously to her fundraiser to support the ‘amazing work’ of Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

“The Mayo Hospice went above and beyond supporting William when he needed palliative care,” she said.

“Our family were never without a hot drink or a sandwich and were supported by them after my brother had passed. Our family are so incredibly grateful for everything the Mayo Hospice did for us and if I can raise some money for them to show how appreciative we are, I'll have done what I wanted to.

“By supporting this fundraiser, you will be helping us as a family to celebrate the life of our beloved brother William and you will receive the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping support our local Hospice and help in the provision of Palliative Care Services in Mayo and Roscommon,” Marian added.
