NORTH Mayo’s new garda superintendent has been welcomed into his new role by members of Mayo’s Joint Policing Committee.

Superintendent Alan Brady, who has a background in policing drugs and organised crime, was welcomed to his first JPC meeting by chairperson, Cllr Al McDonnell.

The Meath native replaces the outgoing Gary Walsh, who has been promoted to the rank of Detective Chief Superintendent, which will see him head the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit.

Cllr McDonnell thanked Det Supt Walsh for his ‘tremendous contribution to policing in County Mayo’ before welcoming Supt Brady to the meeting.

Supt Brady previously worked as in the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

He spent his prior years in the force in Trim, Co Meath, as well as Crumlin and Finglas in Co Dublin.

“My background is primarily crime. I certainly intend to tackle some of the issues in the Mayo North Community Engagement area, such as drugs,” Supt Brady told the Mayo JPC.

Supt Brady said he was ‘very impressed’ with some of the ‘exceptional’ initiatives he had seen since coming to Mayo.

Ray McMahon, Chief Superintendent for the Mayo, Roscommon and Longford garda division, described Supt Brady as ‘a very experienced’ garda and wished Det Supt Walsh well in his new role.
