FORMER Mayo footballer Liam McHale has sought an application form for the position of manager of the Mayo ladies football team.

Mayo LGFA secretary Brian Galvin told The Mayo News that McHale had sought an application form but has yet to formally submit the application. This comes after Midwest Radio reported that the Ballina native had emerged as a frontrunner for the job.

The position has been vacant since Crossmolina native Michael Moyles stepped down after three seasons in charge, during which Mayo won one Connacht title and appeared in three successive All-Ireland semi-finals.

Candidates for the job must have ‘at least three years of a proven track record in club and/or Intercounty Management’ and the ‘ability to demonstrate/organise a high standard of coaching’.

McHale recently departed the Mayo senior football management team, which he recently claimed was due to having ‘a totally different philosophy’ regarding how the team should play.

All-Ireland winning manager Sinéad Stagg has ruled herself out of the running for the job after confirming to The Mayo News that she would be remain as manager of the Mayo Under-14 girls. The ex-Mayo footballer guided the team to an All-Ireland ‘Platinum’ title earlier this summer.

Mayo LGFA are also seeking to appoint managers of the Mayo Under-16 and Minor intercounty squads.

The closing date for applications for all three positions is 5pm on September 15.
