Westport 3-9 Charlestown 1-6

UNDER-16 silverware has headed west to Clew Bay after Westport secured a county title win over a gallant Charlestown side in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence this evening.
Standout performances from Larissa Kelly and Christina McEvilly were key to securing the win against an opposition that never lay down.
A pair of first half goals were also crucial in securing Westport’s victory.
After a slow start from both sides, the game’s opening score arrived in the 11th minute when Christina McEvilly got on the end of a ball before burying it into the Charlestown net with a first-time volley.
The Covies made it goal number two when the rampaging McEvilly fired a shot at the otherwise excellent Róisín Casey, who got a hand to it but couldn't stop it trickling into the net.
Charlestown had as much possession and plenty of chances but kicked far too many wides, totalling seven in the first half – which finished 2-2 to 0-4 in Westport’s favour.
Síofra McGuinness came into the game much more in a second half which began with Cliona Cullen landing a fine Kate Buckley-assisted goal to put a point between the sides.
However, Westport pulled back in front with seven points in a row and put the icing on the cake late on when Larissa Kelly fed Christina McEvilly for a goal which crowned a fine display.
