Mayo County Council axes glamping site after objections from local school

Mayo County Council has refused planning permission for a glamping site following objections by a local school board.

The application for the site at Shraigh in Belmullet was submitted in June this year, with a decision made in the last week (August 3).

If granted, the project would have consisted of five glamping pods on site, as well as the construction of a toilet/shower block, car parking spaces and camper van parking area, effluent treatment system and new entrance on to the public road.

The chairperson of Shraigh National School sent a submission on behalf of the Board of Management to object to the development "in the strongest possible terms".

In the submission, the proposed development was described as "incongruous with and will grossly detract from the local setting and surrounding".

A number of concerns were highlighted, including traffic impact, the lack of a flood risk assessment despite the "very steep nature of the site", and the proximity of the site to the school and local homes.

It is unknown at this time whether or not the decision will be appealed or application re-submitted.
