Transport Minister favours bypass for Ballinrobe

MINISTER for Transport Eamon Ryan is understood to be in favour of a bypass in Ballinrobe.

The Green Party leader discussed several issues – including the Ballinrobe bypass - when he met with elected members of Mayo County Council recently.

Ballinrobe-based councillor Damien Ryan said that Minister Ryan indicated that he would support the construction of a bypass along the South Mayo town.

Speaking to The Mayo News, Cllr Ryan said that Minister Ryan ‘seems to be very much disposed towards getting the Ballinrobe bypass back on the agenda’.

In March, a meeting of the county council’s roads SPC was told that a bypass was ‘high on the list’ for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

In May, Deputy Alan Dillon was informed that the project could be eligible for funding for a strategic assessment report and feasibility assessment under a new programme for national secondary bypasses.

A preferred route for the bypass along the east of the town was ratified by Mayo County Council in 2009 and adopted in the Ballinrobe Local Area Plan.

The preferred route would bypass the town from the east, traversing and connecting the R334 Neale Road, N84 Headford/Galway Road, R331 Claremorris Road and the N60 Castlebar Road.

A total €600,000 has been allocated to install traffic lights in the town, which has suffered with traffic congestion in recent years.
