Gardaí investigating the discovery of a male body on Achill Island are not treating the case as a suspicious incident. The discovery of the body was made by a walker close to Corrymore Lake near Keem Bay at approximately 7.30am this morning.
The body was located in a stream at the bottom of the causeway at Corrymore Lake which is the main water supply for the island. The scene was made safe by the local Achill Island Coast Guard unit to allow gardaí to carry out an investigation. The body was removed to Mayo University Hospital at around 9am in order for a post mortem to take place. A spokesperson for the Gardaí said they are not treating the incident as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the Coroner's office.
The name of the deceased man has not been released but The Mayo News has learned that he is man aged in his 40s who was reported missing by his family in Northern Ireland in recent days.
The body was discovered in a stream which is at the bottom of a causeway approximately 40 feet in height. Anyone who may have information on the discovery of the body is asked to contact Westport Garda Station on 098 50230.
