Ballina District Hospital currently has 62 beds
MOVES are underway to have an upgrade of Ballina District Hospital considered for the HSE’s 2024 capital plan.
The news was disclosed at a meeting of the HSE National Regional Forum following a query from Cllr John O’Hara.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr O’Hara described the existing facility as ‘a very old building’ and that it was ‘not fair’ on staff and patients having to use it.
Joe Hoare, Assistant National Director, HSE Capital & Estates said that engagement was planned over the summer months to put forward a project proposal this September.
“The scope of the proposed project at Ballina District Hospital and the overall masterplan capacity requirements for the site and how it might be best achieved are currently under review,” Mr Hoare stated in his reply to Cllr O’Hara.
“This is in the context of ensuring for the future provision of additional and not just replacement capacity in Mayo for community services to include rehabilitation for the wider population and older people as well as the ongoing wider community bed capacity planning.”
Ballina District Hospital has 62 beds and provides step down facilities for patients discharged from Mayo University Hospital who require a further period of convalescence before being discharged home or being identified as requiring a long stay bed in a community Nursing unit.
The hospital was built following the demolition of Ballina’s old workhouse in 1934.
