Tudor Moldovan was the winner of 2023 Achill Half-Marathon. He received his prize from Pauric Corrigan, Chairperson of Achill Half Marathon and 10k Committee and Brendan Courtney.
Just six days after winning the Waterford Viking Marathon, Tudor Moldovan made little work of the blustery Achill weather to win the Achill Half Marathon for the first time.
The Dublin-based runner was one of 1,400 runners who descended on Achill Island on Saturday to take part in the spectacular Achill Half Marathon and 10k which is one of the highlights in the Irish running calendar.
The organisers of the Achill Half Marathon and 10k must have had the Child of Prague out all night as the horrendous weather on Friday cleared with blue skies greeting the runners on Saturday morning.
Tudor Moldovan, who is coached by Gary O'Hanlon, a previous winner of the Achill Half- Marathon, took to the start line just six days after winning the Waterford Viking Marathon in an impressive time of 2:30:55. His exertions in Waterford had little impact on Tudor who showed a clean pair of heels to Dave Mahon in the final few metres of the race to claim victory in a time of 1:10:52, six seconds ahead of Mahan.
Donal Coakley in a time of 1:15:13 was third while in the women's division, Aisling O'Connor emerged as the victorious athlete, completing the race in 1:28:32, showcasing her exceptional endurance and speed. Right on her heels was Edel Kelly in a time of 1:32:36, followed closely in third place was Louise Hand in at time of 1:34:33.
History made
Meanwhile, there was history made in the 10k race which provided a fantastic opportunity for participants to experience the thrill of competition on a shorter yet still challenging course. For the first time there was a female winner to the 10k when Niamh O'Connor finished in an impressive time of 36 minutes and 19 seconds and ahead of Owen Fletcher, who the first male home in a time of 36:37 seconds.
Davey Duane in a time of 36:48 was the second male home and the third male winner was Fergus Kelly in a time of 37:19. Sarah Lyons, who crossed the finish line with a time of 42:58 was the second female home and in third place was Vanessa McShane with a time of 43:42.
The event, which has been organised by a voluntary committee since 2005, brought together a diverse community of runners from across the globe for a memorable day of competitive racing and camaraderie. Brendan Courtney, TV and radio presenter, returned to Achill to participate again in the 10k, officiating at the start of the Achill Half Marathon and 10k. Brendan admitted to only taking up running during Covid as 'something to do' and after finishing the 10K he confirmed that he thoroughly enjoyed the race and will be back in 2024.
The first Achill lady home in the Achill Half Marathon was Caoimhe McNamara from Achill Sound and the first Achill male home was Finnian McNamara from Crumpaun.
The Achill Half Marathon and 10k Committee, would like to extend its heartfelt congratulations to all participants for their remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication throughout the races. The enthusiastic participation of our residents, who cheered on the runners and provided much-needed encouragement along the route, exemplifies the warm hospitality for which Achill Island is renowned for.
“Also the significant impact that events like the Achill Half Marathon and 10k races have on our local economy and tourism industry is huge. The exposure generated by the event contributes to the sustained growth of visitor numbers, as runners and their families explore the island.”
As the sun set on another unforgettable Achill Half Marathon and 10k races, the committee eagerly looked forward to welcoming runners back for the next edition, promising an even more exceptional event in the future.
