RESIDENTS on the Newport Road in Westport have had to wait six months to have bulbs in the public lighting on the road changed, a meeting of Westport Town Council heard last week.
Cllr Brendan Mulroy had raised the issue at the March meeting of the authority, and Patrick Corcoran, Town Engineer, told last week’s monthly meeting that a meeting with the new providers of the public lighting, Energia, was due to take place today (Tuesday). April 13.
However, Cllr Christy Hyland said it was now six months since the public lighting had been  out on the Newport Road and that was ‘simply not good enough’.
“This is a joke. We are now being told that it takes six months to change a light bulb in Westport. That is absolutely ridiculous,” he said.
Acting Town Manager, Mr Martin Keating, explained that   ther had been some delays with the change over of the providers from the ESB to Energia.
However, Mr Keating gave his assurances to the councillors gathered that the council is  evaluating the process – and they would be getting value for money.
