An independent councillor has agreed to pay his own way on a Council visit to a French village in order to save taxpayer’s money.
At last week’s monthly of Mayo County Council, the County Manager, Des Mahon revealed that the Council had received an invitation from the Mayor of Villers-la-Chevre to visit the village as the area was a walking region.
Cllr Joe Mellett explained that Monica O’Hara, a native of Foxford is a local councillor and said they have experienced the same problems in relation to walking and suggested that the delegation should go to France. Independent councillor Gerry Ginty, who had earlier in the meeting objected to the Council sending a delegation to America for St Patrick’s Day, said he would join the Cathaoirleach and pay his own way.
The councillors agreed to take Cllr Ginty up on his offer and also agreed to send Cllr Gerry Coyle and Cllr Margaret Adams to join the Cathaoirleach on the trip.
