TWO Donegal youths charged in connection with the death of Swinford Garda Robert McCallion have been sent forward for trial.
Jamie McGrenaghan (18) of Gort na Tra, Cashel, Kerrykeel, Co Donegal, and Cathal Dunleavy (19), of Meentagh, Glenvar, Kerrykeel, Co Donegal, were both served with books of evidence at Letterkenny District Court on Thursday last.
McGrenaghan is charged with the unlawful killing of Garda McCallion, who died from injuries received during a stolen car investigation at Tara Court, Letterkenny, on March 26 last. He has also been charged with reckless driving and endangering the lives of two other gardaí, Joanne Doherty and Shane Lavelle, on the same date.
Gda McCallion (29) of Swinford, Co Mayo, died of his injuries in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, on April 7, 2009.
Dunleavy faces charges of theft of a motor vehicle and allowing himself to be carried in a motor vehicle while knowing or believing it to be stolen on the same date.
At Letterkenny Court, Detective Garda Anthony McCabe gave evidence of serving the books of evidence on both accused yesterday morning. Both were returned for trial to Letterkenny Circuit Criminal Court on November 24.
Mr McGrenaghan attended the court with his mother Margaret Rita McGrenaghan. Judge Conal Gibbons approved Mrs McGrenaghan as surety and set bail on his own bond of €100 and €4,000 independent surety. The judge renewed bail conditions, which had previously been set by the High Court.
These include that he observes a 10pm to 8am curfew, that he not associate with the co-accused, Cathal Dunleavy, and that he signs on daily with An Garda Siochana. Garda McCallion died 12 days after being injured. His funeral was one of the biggest ever seen in east Mayo.
