THE Mayo senior football team to play New York on Sunday in the opening round of the Connacht SFC at Gaelic Park has been named.
Four players make their senior championship debuts (Ger Cafferkey, Kevin McLoughlin, Donal Vaughan and Aidan O’Shea) with Trevor Mortimer captaining the team from centre-half forward.
Trevor Howley starts for Mayo for the first time since last August after recovering from an ankle injury. The experiment of playing Andy Moran in the half-back line is also over for the moment as the Ballaghaderreen sharp-shooter starts at corner-forward on Sunday.
The team that plays against New York shows five changes from the side that drew with Tyrone in the NFL last month.
Tom Cunniffe and Conor Mortimer miss out because of injury, Mark Ronaldson has not travelled to the US because of exam commitments, while both Billy Padden and Austin O’Malley have been omitted from the starting fifteen.
Most of the Mayo squad landed in New York earlier yesterday (Thursday) and will train this afternoon at Gaelic Park.

Mayo
D Clarke; L O’Malley, G Cafferkey, K McLoughlin; P Gardiner, T Howley, D Vaughan; R McGarrity, T Parsons; P Harte, T Mortimer, A Dillon; A Moran, A O’Shea, B Moran.
