Kiltimagh to retain payphone
FOLLOWING representations by IRD Kiltimagh Ltd, Eircom has announced that it is to retain one payphone in the town of Kiltimagh for one year, at which time the situation will be reviewed. This follows the telecommunications company’s announcement some months ago that it intends to remove all payphones across the country, including 153 in Mayo. IRD Kiltimagh has welcomed the news, while acknowledging Eircom’s point that the situation as regards mobile phones and phone usage generally has changed and that many of these payphones is generally no longer viable and sustainable. “We feel, however, that it is an important piece of infrastructure in the area, particularly so as to be available for usage by those who are visiting the area or who for some other reason might find themselves in an emergency and without a mobile phone or access to a land line,” said a statement from the IRD. “It is important that this facility be supported and used over the course of the next year. A review will be carried out at that stage and the issue of removal of the last remaining payphone at that time may well come on the agenda.” There are currently five payphones in the vicinity of Kiltimagh.
