Second Independent enters Belmullet Electoral Area race
Anton McNulty
A SECOND Independent candidate will be running in Belmullet Electoral Area in the upcoming local elections after Achill man John Corrigan put his name forward last week. A native of Owenduff, John, a married father, brings with him experience as a parent, farmer, construction plant operator and fitter. He joins sitting Fianna Fáil councillor Micheál McNamara and Fine Gael candidate Pat Kilbane as the Achill candidates putting themselves before the public on June 5. Explaining the reasons for running in the election, John said he had been thinking about running for a couple of months because he feels the people are not being represented and it is time for an Independent voice. He said many people have encouraged him to go forward to represent them and have pledged their support. He believes that he can make an important contribution to Mayo County Council as he explained he understands first hand the difficulties placed on the rural population of west Mayo brought on by issues such as government regulation, high taxation along with the lack of services and opportunities. Mr Corrigan said he intends to work with and for the people of west Mayo in areas which will include farming issues, local planning, tourism and the provision of essential services. He said his campaign launch will take place in the next couple of weeks and he will begin campaigning soon after.
