RESIDENTS of the south Mayo village of Shrule will wake up this morning (Tuesday) knowing they have a reliable water supply – something they have been awaiting for the last 22 years.
Back in 1987, locals were promised that an upgrade in their water supply, to be pumped from Ballinrobe, was in the offing. However, this never materialised and it then emerged that it would be cheaper to bring the improved supply from the Tuam Regional Scheme. This then led to negotiations between Mayo and Galway county councils and these talks have gone on for the last six months, with confirmation finally coming last week that an agreement had been reached and the new supply would be connected today.
Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien said this was a huge relief for everyone in the town as development had been stifled and an incident when a fire broke out in the Dalgan area of the town a few years back had highlighted the seriousness of the situation.
