WESTPORT GAA Club have just signed the contract for Connacht’s first 60-metre by 40-metre all weather astro-turf pitch development.
Contract signed for new Westport all-weather facility
WESTPORT GAA Club have just signed the contract for Connacht’s first 60-metre by 40-metre all weather astro-turf pitch development. The new state-of-the-art facility, which will also include a 30m by 20m training pitch, is set to cost in the region of €500,000. The development will be located at the Westport GAA grounds on the Newport Road. “This is a mammoth development for the entire community and we are confident that when the project is completed in the spring we will have a facility that everyone in Westport will be proud of,” Westport GAA club chairperson Seamus Moran stated as he signed the contract for the development last week. The development of the all-weather facility is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by the Westport GAA club. The club expects the facility to be in full operation and available to the entire community early in spring 2009. The venture is going to be a partnership project and it will be available to the entire community. The facility will be available to schools, clubs, community organisations and indeed it will be available to the business community who have social clubs. “At present we have over 200 youngsters training with the Westport GAA club and this new facility will be a massive incentive for them to keep fit and active when the two main pitches are not available,” added Mr Moran. Fundraising for the project is ongoing at present with some state support already guaranteed from the National Lottery. “We will all have to redouble and intensify our fundraising efforts over the next few months but I think that people can see that this will benefit everyone in the region and, most importantly, it will be available to the young people of the area year-round,” concluded Mr Moran. The floodlit Westport all-weather facility, when completed, will be the first of its kind in the west and will cater for all sports. Bookings for the all-weather astro-turf pitch are now being taken and those interested can contact 087 2217026. Further information is available on www.westportgaa.com.
